රඝු, n. king of Oudh so called, the great-grand father of රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර.

රම් රජ, n. See රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර.

රාම, n. a name common to three incarnations of Vishnu, viz. පරශුරාම, රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර and බලරාම, each of which see; also ap. of වරුණයා and of a horse; also of a sort of deer.

රාම·දූතයා, n. Rama's messenger, viz. Hanuman the chief of the monkey race and helper and messenger of රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර in his wars and in building Adam's Bridge: see රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර.

රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර, n. the second incarnation of Vishnu with the name රාම. He was the son of Dasaratha king of Oudh, born at the end of the second age in order to destroy the demons who infested the earth. He is said to have built Adam's Bridge by which to bring his army from India to make war upon රාවණ who had abducted his wife Sītā.

රාමායණ, n. a H. epic poem celebrating the adventures of රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර.

රාවණ, n. an ancient giant king of a giant race in Ceylon, who was bain by රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර, which see. He is pictured in the temples as a monster having ten heads and twenty arms, with a weapon of war in each hand; see දසකටයා.

රාහු, n. The ascending node considered as a demon. In H. myth. his mother was සිංහිකා; he was a dragon-tailed demon whom Vishnu decapitated in his wars with the demons during his incaruation as රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර, but as Ràhu was immortal his head and tail retained their separate existence and in the stellar sphere became the cause of eclipses, especially the head by attempting from time to time to swallow the sun and moon. The B. account differs considerably from the above, but agrees that Ràhu causes the eclipses as above said. Ràhu's head went to the North and his tail, කේතු, to the South and became respectively the ascending and descending nodes. See Hardy's Manual of Buddhism.

ලක්‍ෂමන්, n. son of දශරථ and half brother of රාමචන්‍ද්‍ර.

සේතු·බන්‍ධනය, n. (සේත්‍ර bridge, බන්‍ධය binding, connection), dam, embankment, වේල්ල; sp. the ridge of rocks called Adam's Bridge, said to have been formed by Hanūman as a bridge for the forces of Rāma when in pursuit of Rāvana. See රාමචන්‍ද්‍රයා.
