අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ ක්ෂාන්තිය, n. non-forbearance, impatience, නොඉවසිල්ල.

අ චේඡ්ද්‍ය, a. (අ ඡේද්‍ය), not to be cut or separated, කැපිය or වෙන්කළ නොයුතු; inseparable, indivisible,වෙන්කළනොහැකිවූ (දේ).

අ තුල්‍ය, a. (අ priv.), unequal, disproportionate, අසම; unequalled, unparalleled, matchless, උපමා නැති. E. S.

අ දර්‍ශනය, n. invisibleness, disappearance, නොපෙනිම.

අ ප්‍රති පුද්ගලයා, n. incomparable or peerless person, සදෘශ නැති අය. E. S.

අ ප්‍රති රූප, a. incomparable, peerless, අසදෘෂ; unsightly, unfit, නොසෑහෙන.

අ ප්‍රභේද, අ ප්‍ර‍‍භෙදිත, a. undivided, unseparated, undistinguished, inarticulate, ප්‍රභේදනැති.

අ ප්‍රභේද්‍ය, a. not to be separated &c., inseparable, indistinguishable, ප්‍රභේදකළ නොහැකිවූ.

අ භෙද්‍ය, a. indivisible, inseparable, indissoluble, බෙදිය or වෙන්කළ නොහැකිවූ.

අ මර පුර, n. or a. city of the Immortals, viz. Amarapura, a city of Burma.

අ මර පුර නිකාය, n. Amarapura sect of Buddhists introduced into Ceylon about A. D. 1800 by Ambagahapitiya priest; the priests of this sect are in communion with priests of Burma.

අ ව්‍යවහිත, a. not separated, closely united, යාවු, සම්බන්ධවු.

අ විශේෂ, a. not special or characteristic, undistinguishing, not differing, ordinary: see අවිශිෂ්ට.

අ විශේෂය, n. a non-characteristic, what does not differ, සාමාන්‍ය එකක්.
