අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ ව්‍යාපක, අ ව්‍යාපන, අ ව්‍යාප්‍ය, a. not diffused or general, limited, පැතිරීනැති, සාමාන්‍ය නොවන; special, peculiar, විශේෂ.

අ ව්‍යාපකත්වය, අ ව්‍යප්තතාව, අ ව්‍යාප්තිය, n. state of not being diffused or general, limitedness &c., පැතිරීනැතිකම; වි‍ශේෂකම.

අ සාධාරණ, a. not general, සාමාන්‍යනොවන, special, විශේෂ; but usually inequitable, partial, unjust, unfair, අනඩු, පක්ෂපාත, අයුතු.

අ සාමාන්‍ය, a. not general, unusual, uncommon, සාමාන්‍ය නොවන.

අ සාමාන්‍යතාව, n. state of not being general, unusualness &c., සාමාන්‍යනැතිකම.

අත් මිදීම, v. n. escaping out of hand, escape in general, getting free.

අන්වය, n. lineage, descent, pedigree, race, පෙළ පත, වංශය; succession in general (of words &c.), අනුපූර්‍වය ක්‍රමය.

අප්පු, n. head servant, general or superintending servant.

අපුල්ලනවා, v. t. to full or wash clothes (generally by beating); pret. ඇපුල්ලුවා; v. n. ඇ පිල්ලීම.

ආ ගම, n. (ආ to, ගම coming), coming, arrival, පැමිණීම; gram. augment; general usage: religious system, religion.

ආ‍‍පාත, a. apt, fit, appropriate, සුදුසු; acquired, ප්‍රාපාත; trusty, trusted, විශ්වාස; generally received, authoritative, ඒත්තුගන්නාලද.

කර අඹනවා, v. to castrate (generally by crushing.)

කවදාවත්, ad. ever, any time or day whatever: generally with negative or interrogative.

කිසි, adj. pron. any, some: generally with neg., as කිසිදෙයක් නෑ, There is nothing.
