අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ කිරිය ච දියා, n. non-retributionist, heathen who denies future retribution.

අ චින්ත්‍ය, a. inconceivable, incomprehensible, inscrutable, සිතිය or දැනගත නොහැකිවූ (දේ).

අ රූප ධර්‍මය, n. B. bodiless state or the four mental states, viz. sensation, perception, apprehension, knowledge.

අ විඥෙය, a. unknowable, incomprehensible, දැනගත—තේරුම්ගත—නොහැකිවු.

අකුරකින් විදිනවා, v. to shoot with a small stone for augury. This is done by taking stones between the two fore-fingers and projecting them against the bark and leaves of trees and then predicting coming events according to the marks made by the stones.

අඦන, a medicinal plant, Holarrhena antidysenterica.

අධි ගමාන්තර්‍ධාන යුගය, n. (අන්තර්‍ධාන) age when the higher or saintly life has disappeared for want of a manifest Buddha.

අන්තඃ කල්පය, n. a certain number of years in Buddhism: according to B. man's age increases by imperceptible degrees from ten years to an Asankhya (අසංඛ්‍ය) and then decreases in the same way to ten years: the period required for this is an Antahkalpa. See අසංඛ්‍ය.

අනු භවය, n. apprehension, තේරුම්ගැනීම; experience, අත්දැකීම; partaking, enjoyment of, භුක්තිවිදීම.

අභි සංස්කාරය, n. (අභි well, සං: putting together or doing), collecting, preparing, පිළි යෙළකිරීම; completing, perfecting, සම්පූර්‍ණ කිරීම; purifying, embellishing, සැරසීම; apprehension, conception, තේරුම්ගැනීම. See සංස්කාරය.

අභි සමය, n. understanding, comprehension, තේරුම්ගැනීම, අවබෝධය; favourable season, හොඳකාලය; good sect or religion, යහපත් ලබ්ධිය or ආගම.

අර්‍ථාවගම, n. (අවගම knowledge), knowledge or comprehension of the meaning, අභිප්‍රාය දැනීම.

අර්‍හත් මාර්‍ගය, n. rahat path: the last and highest of the four paths to Nirvāna, when, all the passions being extinguished, there is no further transmigration, and the rahat attains Nirvāna.

අරෙහෙන්, ad. thence, by that way.
