අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ තන් ගුණය, අ තදගුණය, අත ගුණය, n. (අ priv., තදගුණය), gram. external attribute, viz. non-inherent attribute or attainment, as එතරවුණ, who has crossed or attained.

අ දම, a. unrighteous, අධර්‍මමිෂ්ඨ; heretical, මිථ්‍යාදෘෂ්ටි.

අ නිලයා, n. Æolus, god of the wind: there are 49 minor deities called අනිල;; pl. අනි‍ලයෝ.

අ පන්නක, a. (අ off, පන්නක fallen), heretical, මිථ්‍යාමතික; certain, සන්තක.

අ පරාධීන, a. (අ priv.), not subject to another, independent, වසඟ නැති.

අ පස්වාදිය, n. diboyalty, treachery, perfidy, ද්‍රෝහිකම.

අ ප්‍රති සන්ධික, a. (අ priv., ප්‍රති again, සන්ධික uniting), free from further transmigration, සසරින් මිදුණ.

අ භ්‍රාත්‍රීය, a. unbrotherly, unfraternal. E. S.

අ මග, n. (අ priv., මග way), error, මුළාව, heresy, මිත්‍යා දෘෂ්ටිය.

අ මෘතය, n. deathless state, immortality, අමර ණීයකම; ap. of Nirvana as freedom from further liability to death; ambrosia, දිව්‍ය භෝජනය, nectar of the gods, අමාපැන්.

අ රජකයා‍, n. non-washerman, රදානොවන්නා.

අ රූ තල, n. pl. the bodiless realms or planes, viz. the four brahma worlds where the inhabitants are immaterial.
