අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ මර පුර නිකාය, n. Amarapura sect of Buddhists introduced into Ceylon about A. D. 1800 by Ambagahapitiya priest; the priests of this sect are in communion with priests of Burma.

අ රූපාවචර, a. pert. to the immaterial planes or those four brahma worlds; or n. bodiless or immaterial plane or world, viz. where immaterial beings are or the mind alone exists.

අ සන්තක, a. not belonging to, අයිතිනැති, හිමි නැති.

අ හිමි, a. unowned, not belonging to, හිමිනැති, අයිතිනැති.

අංගුලි ගණිතය, n. counting by the fingers, dactylonomy. E. S.

අඟාරනවා, v. i. to waddle, toddle, shuffle along, ගාටනවා; pret. ඇඟෑරුවා; v. n. ඇඟෑරීම.

අඩි තබනවා. අඩි තබායනවා, v. to step, pace, step along.

අති තණ්හාව, n. ardent longing, තද ආශාව; great avarice, මහත් තණ්හාව.

අදන් මග, n. a lengthy way, long road, දිග or දුර මග.

අනයිති, a. (අන් අයිති), not belonging or pertaining to, අයිති නැති.

අන් සතු,අන් සන්තක, a. belonging to another, අන්කෙනෙකුට අයිතිවූ.

අන්ද, acacia, of which there are several species in Ceylon, Dichrostachys cinerea (Legum.), see කටුඅන්දර, මහඅන්දර and හීන් අන්දර.

අනු තෂීය, n. thirst, පිපාසය; longing, desire, ආශාව.

අනෝදා, marsh-mallow, Abutilon asiaticum (Malv.).
