අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

උච්චාරණයකරනවා, v. t. to utter, articulate, pronounce, ශබ්ද කරනවා.

උච්චාර්‍ය්‍ය, a. to be pronounced; pronounceable, utterable, ශබ්දකළ යුතුවු or හැකිවු.

උච්චාර්‍ය්‍ය මාන, a. that is pronounced or uttered, ශබ්දවෙන.

උච්චාරිත, a. pronounced, uttered, ශබ්දකරනලද.

එ, n. The second letter of the labials, the aspirate of the preceding letter, expressed by ph and pronounced like p in uphill, allowing the h to coalesce with the p.

ඔ, n. The fourteenth letter of the alphabet: a short o of which there is no exact equivalent in English. It is the short sound of the next vowel and is much like the vowel in hope pronounced very short without making it like hop or not.

ඔ, prefix, used in the formation of personal and adjective pronouns &c., to indicate relation to the second person, as ඔපමණ, ඔය, like the Latin Iste.

ක, n. The first consonant of the alphabet, K. When no vowel is written with it, like all the consonants, it is vocalized by means of the first vowel අ, which though unwritten is pronounced after it, as ක ka.

ඛ, n. The second consonant of the alphabet; it is the preceding letter aspirated, expressed in English letters by kh and pronounced like k in black-hall allowing the h to coalesce.

ඝ, n. The fourth consonant of the alphabet. It is the preceding letter aspirated, expressed in English letters by Gh, and pronounced like g in drag-house, allowing the h to coalesce.
