අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ පන්නකය, n. the first descent or incarnation of Buddha.

අ ප්‍රථමාවක්, n. (ප්‍රථමා first), gram. any case except the first, any oblique case.

අක් යහළ, අක් යාළ, n. the first load, the load of paddy separated to God out of that first brought home.

අග සස්, n. pl. E. of අග්‍රසස්‍ය: the first corn of a crop, ප්‍රථම ධාන්‍ය.

අගස්, n. for අගසස්: the first eorn of a crop, first-fruits.

අගස් දන, අගස් දානය, n. gift or offering of first-fruits or of corn first cut.

අග්‍ර ගස්‍ය, n. the best corn (either ගොයම් or ධාන්‍ය); first-fruits, See අගස්.

අග්‍ර ජ, a. first-born, කුලුඳුල්,

අග්‍ර ජයා, n. mas. first-born, කුලුඳුලා; elder brother, අයියා; Brahmin, බමුණ.

අග්‍ර සරයා, n. one who goes first, forerunner, leader. See අගසැරි

අධි මාසය, n. intercalary month, consisting of the difference between the solar and lunar year; super or superior month, viz., the first of any two months that begin during one and the same sign of the zodiac.

අනන්‍යපූර්‍ව, a. no other previous, viz. virgin, නන්‍යාවූ; fig. maiden, first, අලුත්, පළමුවෙනි.

අපරන්ත, n. the after-crop (but not the same kind as the first).

අමුතු බත, n. fresh rice (cooked for strangers); first cooked rice (of the harvest).
