අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ භාව, a. non-existent, පැවැත්මක් නැති: negative, privative, නැතිබව හඟවන.

අ භාව නිගමනය, n. log. negative conclusion, negation.

අ භාව වශයෙන්, ad. negatively, නැති බව පෙන් වන විධියෙන්.

අ භාව වාචකය, n. gram. a negative, privative, නැත යන අර්‍ථ ඇති කියමන.

කර, p. pl. of කරනවා. The inherent vowel in this word has the sound of the obscure or neutral a in negative; in කර below the vowel of ක is like u in putty.

කවදාවත්, ad. ever, any time or day whatever: generally with negative or interrogative.

ද්වි·විධ·ශීල, n. pl. the two kinds of religions ordinances: positive and negative, viz. චාරිත්ත, observances, and වාරිත්ත, prohibitions or things to be avoided.

න, prefix, with a negative, privative or prohibitive force. Its normal form is නො, as නොකර, but its vowel is varied according to the vowel which follows and sometimes is merely න‍. Thus නාරින for නොඅරින, නෑර, for නොඇර, නේන for නොඑන, නූපන් for නො උපන්, නුදුටු &c., but not නී, as නොඉල්ලා, not නීල්ලා.

නහමක්, ad. as negative or prohibitive, නො, එපා: as නහමක් කරව for නොකරව.

නැත, නැත්, ad. no, not; also, there is or are not: negative of the verb substantive, whilst ‍නොවේ negatives the copula: ඒක නැත or නෑ that does not exist or is not present, ඒක ‍නොවේ it is not that.

නැතකියනවා, v. to negative, deny, contradict.

නෑර, p. pl. for නො ඇර, negative of ඇරෙනවා.

නි·ෂේධ, නි·ෂේධාර්‍ථ, a. (·අර්‍ථ), negative, privative, නැත යන තේරුම ඇති.

නි·ෂේධ·නිපාතය, නිෂේධාර්‍ථ·නිපාතය, n. negative or privative particle, as Non, නිර් &c.
