අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ ප්‍රභේද, අ ප්‍ර‍‍භෙදිත, a. undivided, unseparated, undistinguished, inarticulate, ප්‍රභේදනැති.

අ ප්‍රභේදතාව, අ ප්‍ර‍භේදිතතාව, n. state of being undivided &c., inarticulateness, indistinctness, ප්‍රභේද නැතිකම, නොපැහැදිලිකම.

අ ප්‍රභේද්‍ය, a. not to be separated &c., inseparable, indistinguishable, ප්‍රභේදකළ නොහැකිවූ.

අ ප්‍රසාදය, n. turbidness &c., indistinctness, නොපැහැදිලිකම.

අ මද්‍ය පාන, a. teetotal, total-abstinence, මත් පැන් නොබොන.

අ මාංස භක්ෂණය, n. the practice of vegetarianism, lit, abstinence from flesh.

අ රුචි ජනක, අ රුචි ද්‍රයක, a. producing or giving bad flavour or dibike, nauseous, disgusting, loathsome, අප්‍රියාව උපදවන, පිළිකුල්.

අ ව්‍යක්ත රාගය, n. indistinct colour, viz. dark-red colour, අඳුරු රතුපාට.

අ ව්‍යක්තතාව, n. indistinotness &c., අප්‍රකාශකම; illiteracy, නුගත්කම.

අ ව්‍යය, a. unwasting, undecaying, ක්ෂයනොවන; gram. indeclinable, වරනැගීමක් නැති.

අ විභාවිත, a. unascertained, unperceived, undistinguished, දැනනොගන්නාලද, දැනීනැති.

අ විශිෂ්ට, a. undistinguished, වෙන්නොකරනලද, ordinary, සාමාන්‍ය, පොදු.

අ විශේෂ, a. not special or characteristic, undistinguishing, not differing, ordinary: see අවිශිෂ්ට.

අ විශේෂිත, a. unmarked, uncharacterised, undistinguished, විශේෂ ලකුණක් නැති, සාමාන්‍ය.
