අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ තප් තලය, n. cool plain, name of a Brahma world, බ්‍රහ්මලෝකයක්.

අ තලය, n. the abyss, the under-world, a particular hell, පාතාලය.

අ දක්ෂිණීය, අ දක්ෂිණර්‍භ, a. (අර්‍භ worthy), unfit for offering; undeserving an offering (as B. P.). See දක්ෂිණිය, &c.

අ පා, අ පාද, අ පාදක, අ පාදි, a. footless, without legs or feet (as worms &c.), පාද-කකුල්නැති.

අ පුණ්‍ය, a. demeritorious, කුසල් නැති, unworthy, අයහපත්; unfortunate, අවාසනාවන්ත.

අ භක්තිකයා, n. irreligious person, godless one, worldling, භක්තිනැත්තා, නොඇදහිලිකාරයා.

අ රූ තල, n. pl. the bodiless realms or planes, viz. the four brahma worlds where the inhabitants are immaterial.

අ රූපාවචර, a. pert. to the immaterial planes or those four brahma worlds; or n. bodiless or immaterial plane or world, viz. where immaterial beings are or the mind alone exists.

අ රූපි බඔ ලොව, n. incorporeal brahma world: any one of the four අරුතල.

අ ලෞකික, a. unworldly; non-secular, ලෞකික නොවන.

අ වර්‍ණ නිය, a indescribable, E. S.; unpraise. worthy, ප්‍රශංසා ලබන්ට නොවටින.

අ ව්‍යය, අ ව්‍යය ශබ්දය, n. gram. an indeclinable word.

අ විභක්ති වාචකය, n. indeclinable word: see අව්‍යයය.

අ විශ්වාස, a. untrustworthy, uncertain, elusory, unfaithful, විශ්වාස නැති; unbelieving, විශ්වාස නොකරන.
