අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ නත, a. unbent, erect, unbending, rigorous, වකුටුනැති, නැමිනැති, නොනැමෙන.

අ නිභූතමාන, අ නිහතමනී, a. unbending, නොනැ ‍මෙන, rigid, තද, uncondescending, යටත් පහත් නොවන, haughty, ආඩම්බර.

අ ප්‍රණම, a. unbending, inductile, නොනැමෙන.

අක්ෂි ගත, a. affecting the eyes; offending the eyes, odious, වෙෂ්‍ය, ඉතා අප්‍රිය.

අධ්‍යක්ෂ, a. (අධි over, pervading, අක්ෂ organ of sense), perceptible, visible, ප්‍රකට; superintending, supervisory, පරිපාලක, බලාගන්න.

අනමතග්ග, අනමතාග්‍ර, a. (අ, අමෘත, අග්ග, not ending in Nirvāna), without beginning or end.

අන්තානතත්ත, a. (අන්ත අනත්ත), limited and unlimited, ending and endless, finite and infinite.

අනු ජීවක, අනු ජීවි, a. (අනු with), living with, attending upon, serving, අතවැසි, සේවක.

අනු නයි, a. courteous, respectful, condescending, ආචාරවන්ත, උඬඟු නැති.

අනු බන්ධනය n. binding together, connecting, appending, සන්ධිකෙරීම; appendage, appurtenance, concomitant, සම්බන්ධවු දෙය.

අප්පු, n. head servant, general or superintending servant.

අරළුව, n. root descending from a branch of the banyan tree.

අලුත් වැඩියාව, n. mending, repair, renovation, improvement හරිගැස්සීම.

අව තරණය, n. crossing over, descending එතර වීම, මෙතරවීම, ගොඩබැසීම.
