අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ චය, අ ව්තීය , a. lit. secondless, viz. the only, sole, unique, එකමවූ; non-dual; peerless, (E. S.): n. non-duality.

අ චිරවතිය, n. second of the five great rivers issuing from lake Anavatatta. See අනව තත්ත විල.

අ ප්‍රධාන, a. subordinate, secondary, ප්‍රධාන නොවන.

අ ප්‍රධානකරනවා, v. t. to subordinate, make secondary.

අග්නි, n. H. god of fire; god of the south-east; the second age of the Hindus called Trētā, ත්‍රේතායුගය. Bot.

අඟල, අඟුල, n. length of the second section of the fore-finger, viz. inch; pl. අඟල්.

අනු නායක උන්නාන්සේ, n. B. P. the secondhigh-priest.

අනු මතකරනවා, අනු මතිකරනවා, v. t. to instigate, prompt, පොළඹවනවා, suggest, හඟව නවා; consent to, second (a proposal), එකඟ වෙනවා.

අනු ව්‍යඦන, n. pl. (අනු secondary), minor marks or characteristics (see අශීත්‍යනුව්‍යඦන).

අනු,, prefix, signifying association, with; like, according to; sub, secondary, assistant; after. [This must not be confounded with අනු from අන්. and a following උ such as අනුචිත fr. අන්උචිත.]

අනුබුඬ, අනුබුඬවරයා, n. secondary or inferior Buddha, පසේ බුදුන්.

ආ, n. The second vowel of the alphabet, sounded like a in 'calm' or 'charm' its non-initial form is (ා) following the consonant it vocalizes, as කා Kā.

ආෂාඨාව, n. twenty-first and twenty-second lunar mansions,පුවසළ, උතුරුසළ.

ඉන්අනිද්දා, n. the second day after to-morrow.
