ශ, n. The first of the seventh or sibilant class of letters. It is a palatal sibilant and its true sound is probably a light Sh as heard in the word Cession; but in general usage it does not differ from the dental ස. Some words are written either with ශ or ස.

ශස්ත්‍රය, n. weapon, ආයුධය, instrument, ආවූ දය, මෙවලම; sword, කඩුව.

ශිල්පකාරයා, n. artificer, artisan, mechanic, කම්කරුවා.

ශාද·වල, a. (වල to cover), covered with young grass, verdant.

ශෛලාටයා, n. (·අට් to go), mountain-rover: ap. of the lion, සිංහයා, and of a mountaineer or barbarian, වනචරයා.

ශුණ්ඩියා, n. distiller or tavern-keeper, සුරාපාන ය පෙරන්නා or විකුණන්නා; elephant, අලියා.

ශුභ්‍රාංශුව, n. (අංශුව ray), white-ray, viz. the moon, හඳ; camphor, කපුරු.

ශ්‍රී·පාදය, n. the supposed footprint of Buddha on the summit of the mountaiu called Samanalagala or Adam's Peak.

ශරාකාර·සන්‍ධිය, n. sagittal suture or joint. E.S.

ශාස්ත්‍ර, n. pl. or a. pert. to science, scientific; commands; sciences &c.; sacred books, Shastras, හින්දු ආගමේ වේද පොත්.
