අ, n. The first letter of the Alphabet. It varies bightly in pronunciation, depending sometimes on the meaning or derivation and sometimes on the consonants with which it is combined. It is (1) the clear, distinct sound obtained by shortening ආ ah; (2) the sound of a in negative or miracle. In initial syllables the sound is generally the first of these; the second arises from the dropping of the voice in the unaccented syllables. It is written only when it is the initial letter of a word, but is pronounced after every consonant to which no other vowel is attached, or where it is not suppressed by the sign ්, as කරනවා, karanavā, the final vowel අ, which is long, alone being written;කරන් karan, the vowel අ after න being suppressed by the sign ්.

අ කමැතිව, අ කමැත්තෙන්, ad being unwilling, unwillingly.

අ ඛණ්ඩනීයතාව &c., n. state of being unbreakable, indestructibility, irrefrangibility, කඩ කළ or කැඩිය නොහැකි ස්වභාව.

අ ඛණ්ඩිතතාව, අ ඛණ්ඩිතත්වය, n. state of not being broken, entirety, &c., කැඩීනැති ස්වභාව, continuity, පැවතීම.

අ දෘශ්‍යමානකම, අ දෘශ්‍යමානතාව, n. state of being unseen, invisibility.

අ දෘෂ්ටතාව, n. state of being unseen, invisibility.

අ නීචකම, අ නීචතාව, n. state of not being low or mean, respectability.

අ ප්‍රභේදතාව, අ ප්‍ර‍භේදිතතාව, n. state of being undivided &c., inarticulateness, indistinctness, ප්‍රභේද නැතිකම, නොපැහැදිලිකම.

අ මනුෂ්‍යයා, n. a non-human being, viz. a demon, devil or evil spirit, රාක්ෂසයා, යක්ෂයා.

අ මිශ්‍රතාව, අ මිශ්‍රිතතාව, n. state of being unmixed &c., මිශ්‍ර නැතිකම.

අ රූපාවචර, a. pert. to the immaterial planes or those four brahma worlds; or n. bodiless or immaterial plane or world, viz. where immaterial beings are or the mind alone exists.

අ ව්‍යාපකත්වය, අ ව්‍යප්තතාව, අ ව්‍යාප්තිය, n. state of not being diffused or general, limitedness &c., පැතිරීනැතිකම; වි‍ශේෂකම.

අ විඥාතතාව, n. state of being unknown: obscurity &c. අප්‍රසිඬකම.

අ ශික්ෂිතකම, අශික්ෂිතතාව, n. state of being untrained; indecency &c., obscenity, කැතකම &c.

අ සං සෘතිය, n. non-transrnigration, absorption (of being), සංසාරය නැතිකම.
